Class: 6th to 8th, Lesson 4.1 : OPERATING SYSTEM

Purpose: Students should learn Operating System (OS), types of OS and ‘Task Manager’ window.

No. of Classes

Depending upon the class strength and number of computers (Three classes for 20 students with five computers).

Materials Required

Computer.

Prior knowledge

Students should know that the ‘Windows Explorer’ icon is the same as the ‘This PC’ icon.

Exercise:1



1. What is an Operating System (OS)? Give some examples of OS. Are cell phones also computers?

2. How does the Operating System (OS) control all the devices and applications? Open the following applications and find the CPU usage and how much memory is utilised for all these applications - Open Office, Windows Explorer, Google Chrome.

3. What is Clipboard? Define the use of Clipboard.


Teacher's Instruction
  1. Teachers should ensure that more than one application is open at the same time.
  2. Teachers should motivate the Students to give the answer orally (colloquial tamil) for usage of clipboard.
  3. Teachers should show the folders and apps available in their mobile phones and make the Students understand that mobile phones are similar to Computers.
  4. Teachers should teach how to open the ‘Task Manager’ window. (Ctrl+Alt+ Del or Ctrl+Shift+Esc or Right click on the task bar and select the ‘Task Manager’ window).
